Going out with a Bang!

‘Going out with a bang!’ is a collaboration between students in the Ceramics and Printmaking departments. The project has been student-led and has resulted in a series of experimental works which employ traditional printmaking techniques and new technologies to explore the possibilities of printing on the ceramic surface and prints which investigate images of ceramic forms. All works have been made outside of academic study times and are the result of the students’ enthusiasm, research and hard work.

Images from the series Relative Existence, these photographs explore the relationship of humans with their built environments. The starting point for this body of work being the alienation experienced within a highly populated metropolitan area; examined throughout the arts since the birth of modernization. Oblivious/Oblivion is inspired by the Australian bush and these cut paper drawings are the intermediate stage between "plein air" drawings and my sculptures and installations.

I am currently focusing on the elements of earth, wind and fire and here I'm referencing bushfires and the role they play in the Australian landscape.

While the first of my drawings, 'In the Park' was made in early January 2009, the work was quickly overtaken by the overwhelming nature and tragedy of the Victorian bushfires in February. The result was that, while I continued with my minimalist response to the landscape, attempting to represent it's essence by a line or simple shape, I felt it was important in this instance, to incorporate colour to represent the power and threat of these fires.

From simple beginnings, the elements in my works seem to take on their own order or relationships as I "play" with them. The repetitive nature of this "play" also produces for me, a meditative quality that is combined with the excitement, power and terror of a bushfire.

While it is easy for many printmakers to fall into a solitary practice after leaving NAS, our class was lucky enough to have developed into a kind of family group. This support base has been inspirational. It is important to share the fruits of our labour and express the importance of maintaining active contact with other artists - especially in a school that takes such pride in its sense of artistic community.
We have carried this value into our practice by creating editions for exchange portfolios within our class, and also tried to reach out to you through our opening night with a presentation of home baked goods. For us, food and printmaking have equal nutritional value. We are always hungry for more...whether for artistic fulfilment, or just another big piece of cake. So, this exhibition is a celebration - a feast for all starving (and not so starving) artists, and anyone else with a stomach and aspirations.

Playing with Water

The works in this exhibition reflect a year long visual exploration of water.

Water: it is colorless and both transparent and opaque; it reflects the colors of the things around it. When it is opaque, it is at its most reflective. It is also shapeless, molding itself to the shape of the things it comes into contact with.

Water: it is almost endlessly in motion, changing color and shape almost continuously. Looking at a large body of water, like the sea, is like looking at a solid, mobile, color changing mass. Being in water, in the sea, is to feel the motion, the energy, of the sea. It is an immersion into that energy.

Some of the works in this exhibition were made using ink wash on paper, some were made using oil on paper, and some were made using oil mixed with pigment and acrylic binder on canvas.

There is a way in which the action of applying a wash or paint to a support is like the experience of swimming in water. There is a physical effort required like the effort needed to stay afloat in water. The greater the movement in the water, the greater the effort required to stay afloat. Applying a wash to paper is like the fluid, rhythmic movement of swimming in a lap pool; applying oil paint to canvas, especially a large one, is like being in strong surf.

Summer Days Summer Nights displays the diverse range of directions feasible in third year sculpture and showcases our early self directed works. This exhibition marks the transition of our sculpture class from a brief driven second year into a wholly self directed third year and our efforts to come to term with this move. For us this exhibition was a motivation for us to create art at a time when its easy to feel lost and overwhelmed with the myriad of artistic possibilities facing us.

The Lovers

The Lovers series explores relationships both human and formal. Each individual image is a portrait of friends who are also lovers. In total I have captured four couples in a lyrical almost absurdist manner. Through the depiction of each couple in a playful dalliance, dynamics are revealed that provide insight into the workings or mechanics of the relationship.

Throughout the image making process I have been preoccupied with representation of space in an effort to contain a dynamic relationship. Throughout this process the manipulation of space common in the work of artist Francis Bacon has been an influential focus.

Similarly, The Lovers explores the notion of space as an arena to contain the interaction between the figures. The series separates this space from the undefined area of the image, moreover from the continuity of the real world. This in effect prevents the images from retaining the atmosphere of the external world and works to isolate the relationships and instill them with their own logic, rules and possibilities.

"A feel of perceptual freefall before recognition; before words and labeling, before control and predictability takes place. Not able to express myself in words, or extract much meaning of others... my first time in Australia was an experience of acute seeing!"

Piloting from Sydney to Darwin in 2006 Kristins eyes devoured the intriguing contours and turns in nature, at first through maps and later via an aerial view. An utterly fascinating experience: curved strata representing millions of years of geologic transformation, and small, staight lines representing the determined hand of man.

Her unique experiences of a new, thoroughly unknown terrain have
inspired this installation.

Kristin Rymoen Ellstrom is a third year National Art School student, pilot, Norwegian, Swedish & increasingly something else.

Intimate Line - Intimate Space

Intimate Line

In this drawing project I am investigating line as a record of the act of concentration.

These lines do not describe anything that can be seen in the world; as I draw them they track my state of mind as it shifts between “concentrating” and “not concentrating”.
I use a straight-edge, which suits my desire for order and talent for creating methodical analyses. Using a straight-edge also removes the requirement of making decisions about the path the line could/should/would take. All there is to concentrate on is the touch of the drawing material, the beginning and ending point of each line, and the spacing between lines – in these activities the concentration task is to achieve consistency in the estimated location and the execution of each line.

At the end, the drawing is a visible record of my humanity- my projection of a desired (ideal) outcome and the impossibility of executing it perfectly.

Intimate Space

‘Space’ is an abstract, disconnected, ‘scientific’ way of thinking about the urban environment.

This vision of the city is illustrated by diagrams showing functional zoning, or traffic flows, or the incidence of crime. The spatial arrangement of the city is manipulated to achieve particular economic or social ends.

This pictorial investigation of space is looking at the intimate in the built/constructed environment, the ‘personalised’ space. This work uses space that both surrounds and is contained by the skeletal structure of the body to examine the relationship between the ideas of the intimate and the constructed space.

Art in Progress & Without Boundaries

This exhibition displays the varied ideas and themes being explored by 3rd year in Ceramics. Each of us approaches form, technique, and technology from a different direction. Each of us with varied backgrounds, influences, and ideas about art.

We would like to share with you some of our work in progress, leading us into the 2nd semester. As Ceramic students we work not only with clay, water, and the technology of controlled fire and oxygen; but also with many different materials, which when combined and altered in different degrees of heat allow us to vary surfaces and effects

Some of us are exploring traditional vessels and altered versions, some are looking at new forms within our imagination that speak about dreams, memories and emotions. Others are interpreting the natural landscape around them and redefining it through their work.

Each of us are experimenting with the technical aspects of the kiln, evolving our designs and learning the details of our technology.In the Ceramic process we are given the gift of surprise but must accept that chance plays a great role within the kilns atmosphere. Although each of us are on our own individual creative path, we would also like to share with you some of our drawings, paintings and mark making: our imaginations journey through all disciplines.

Colour and light

This exhibition represents my artistic journey over the period of one year (2006).

In selecting the works for this show, my intention was not necessarily to put together a coherent body of work, but more to demonstrate the range of possibilities and ideas an artist can discover by working within a restricted set of parameters.
My year began with a desire to investigate ideas of surface and the issue of painting vs object, but soon I found myself floundering under a sea of too much paint, too much colour and too many materials. So I made a decision to discard paint and colour altogether and to restrict myself to a limited range of materials.
By taking this step and by initially only using traditional hand-made gesso on wood, I began to produce works that, upon first glance appeared quite simple. Soon though, they began to force me to address other important questions and issues that I had previously over-looked. I began to consider in more depth; light, reflection, dimensions, how the paintings/objects were positioned or attached, how they talked to each other, surface, time, space, weight, evidence of the artists hand and many other important, yet previously unconsidered, elements.
After many months of working within these parameters, I slowly began to reintroduce colour into my work and also to experiment with other materials such as acetate, paper and spray enamel. The difference being that I was working in a much more controlled, refined and considered manner, using the knowledge and awareness of the previous few months. The resulting works, whilst different in many ways, were now effectively and more importantly ‘speaking the same language’. It is some of these works I have chosen to exhibit here.

In Looking for Line, the artists’ works explore perception of form through line. The concept connects the subjects of landscape, figure and still life, incorporating disciplines of sculpture, painting and the drawn image.
“For us, this exhibition is an opportunity to contemplate our works from the past two years study; reflect on our interests and pose further questions for our continuing involvement in the visual arts.”
Kate Butcher utilises drawing, sculpture and mixed media to reveal the specific relationships between selected media but more importantly the artist and curator. The selection of work is not simply restricted to a date of production or type of media. Kate has selected works based on line, exploring the act of drawing and the art of seeing.
Susie Williams work records a drawn response to human form as it occupies space, using line and mark to deconstruct form into rhythmic elements of composure and movement. These studies aim to expose the form as it undertakes sharp or soft action, tension, twist and poise.

The exhibit intends to display the high calibre of education offered and the level of committment required to complete the BFA.

24 HOUR ARTY PEOPLE : 24 poems by James Shirlaw

This event will be a release night for my poetry collection, as a one night exhibition of the poetry followed by a performance piece that I’ll be executing.
The 25 poems will be handwritten on 25 large individual sheets of paper and exhibited across both levels.
The event will be marked by a performance piece entitled ‘Narcissus’. A large scale self portrait drawing would be hung upstairs depicting myself in a joyful social mood. In turn l will be painted completely in black body paint covered with a black umbrella and seated in one corner acting as the dark angered alter ego who similarly is frozen as the extreme opposite of the happy careless figure in the drawing. The seated figure will keep constant eye contact with the drawing through out the opening and should make no communication with anyone in the room. To incorporate a third party into the performance the seated figure will become progressively drunk through out the evening. The unplanned effects of strong intoxication will act as the humane, sporadic element to the performance as it’s impossible to know the exact outcome.
The body of the performance dealing with two solitary objects relates to my conflicting practices in writing and visual art, both competing for time and quality and perhaps for acceptance and exposure as an art student.

I am interested in how self portraiture can be used to reveal an inner psychology. My self portraits are digitally manipulated to convey the two-dimensional plane of a picture as two levels of reality, one behind the other, to suggest simultaneous parallel worlds or reality. My work references Jeff Wall and Ingmar Bergman in how they both explore psychological states through cropping, body language, composition and lighting.
Each of my images contains multiple self portraits that appear to interact with each other; revealing a narrative of inner conflict experienced in domestic situations. The mood of these portraits is invoked through subdued colour and luminosity.

A selection of drawings from Second Year sculptors’ drawing projects demonstrate methods in which sculptors explore ideas in both two and three dimensions, investigating how line and form could operate in 3-dimensional space.

These works are from 3 projects set in General Drawing 2D (Ivor Fabok, Lecturer).
· Producing a form without looking at it during its making (therefore producing a form based on a conceptual idea of a a particular object); drawing from that form; using drawings and construction to create further transformation.
· Investigating how color can play the role of form, using both 2 and 3-dimensional techniques.
· Constructing the line in 3-dimensional space, such that it dominates any 3-dimensional forms that are used in the construction.

Works were often begun using standard drawing techniques (e.g. collage, photocopy transformation, drawing on paper) and were then expanded into the realm of constructed drawings.

For this series of work I explored the relationships of my parents, their friends as well as my own relationship. I am particularly interested in the way couples interact and behave with each other. After spending some time with them, I started to notice that sometimes they unconsciously imitate each other’s actions, developing gestures and mannerisms of one another’s personality. After witnessing their daily routines, I directed a scene that I felt captured the nature of their relationship to form a narrative. I aimed to encapsulate these couple’s cultural values that express their dreams and desires as well as their everyday routines. I have also selected particular details of interiors within their houses to reflect the psychological state of their relationship. The photographic work of Tina Barney, Diane Arbus, Anne Zahalka, Julie Mack, Martin Parr have all inspired me.

Photo Sensitive Paper

This is an exhibition of studies, exploring numerous themes such as the imagery of poets, the technical process of etching and woodcut, and the surrealism of the human figure. The show also brings together studies built strongly on colour or investigations into forms using collage.

The title of my show deals with a shrinking occupation of materials in my work, an interest in the creation of an image solely from a beam of light. Specifically the title relates to how photography can simplify art making to a creation of chemicals over a picture already made, then how this relates to working from memory at the easel.

The motivation for the processes and studies in the show, is from undertaking core subjects in both theory and practical at N.A.S. and from independent research. Recently the attraction towards performance art has triggered a use of non existent sculpture as a bridge between the physicality of art history and ‘the heavens’ of intangible performance and site specific art.

I’m trying to explore our physical condition as one always shadowed by an enormous primal truth that divides science and materialism from faith. We are deciding hundreds of times a day whether to resort to faith or solution, neither with the promise we board a stronger vessel than the one we exist in.

Rudy Kistler is a graduate of the School of the Arts Institute of Chigao, U.S.A., and is currently studying for his MFA in Painting as an international student at the National Art School, expecting to graduate in 2007.

What you need to know to exhibit :
The Library Stairwell Gallery aims to offer a public showcase for National Art School student work and opportunities for full-time enrolled students to gain exhibition experience.

The Gallery runs a programme of staff- and student-proposed group and individual exhibitions. Participants are selected by a committee comprising staff and students. The exhibition programme is finalised one semester in advance. Students need to be enrolled for the semester in which they propose to exhibit.

Submissions are welcomed from academic staff wishing to curate and students wishing to curate or exhibit in individual or group exhibitions. To ensure the most benefit to the most students, priority may be given to group exhibitions. Priority is also likely to be given to proposals that clearly describe the work and that demonstrate work is/will be of educational benefit and of a standard appropriate for public exhibition.

Visual documentation is encouraged as an aid to selection. This could be of the proposed work, if complete or mostly complete; or it could be of past work that indicates what the current studio activity proposed for exhibition will be like when finished. Visual documentation can be submitted as digital files on CD [72 dpi Jpeg format, Mac+PC readable], colour photographs or colour slides. Remember any visual documentation submitted should be a good representation of the work. For example, badly exposed photographs or pixellated files are not helpful.

Proposal writing is covered in the Year 3 Professional Practice programme. It’s recommended that students consult their lecturers for advice when preparing a proposal.
